Your Massachusetts driver’s license has an expiration date, and letting it lapse can cost you more than just a trip to the RMV. Driving with an expired license is a civil traffic violation, and if your license expires more than two years ago, you will need to retake the learner’s permit exam and the road test all over again.
The good news: renewing your Massachusetts driver’s license is straightforward when you know your options. This guide covers online renewal, in-person renewal at the RMV and AAA, fees, REAL ID upgrades, expired license rules, and everything else you need before your renewal date arrives.

Who Can Renew a Massachusetts Driver’s License?
Most Massachusetts drivers are eligible to renew their license online or in person at the RMV. However, not everyone can use the online option, and some situations block renewal entirely until certain issues are resolved.
You must renew in person if any of the following apply to you:
- You hold a limited-term license (tied to a visa or immigration status with an expiration date)
- You do not have a Social Security number on file with the Massachusetts RMV
- You are upgrading from a standard license to a REAL ID for the first time and need to present identity documents
You cannot renew your Massachusetts driver’s license at all until you resolve:
- A current license suspension or revocation
- Unpaid parking tickets in Massachusetts
- Unpaid motor vehicle excise taxes
- Unresolved EZ-Pass violations
If any of these blocks apply, contact your city or town to pay outstanding tickets or excise taxes, or contact the RMV directly to address suspension or EZ-Pass issues. Your renewal will be processed once those holds are cleared.
How to Renew Your Massachusetts Driver’s License Online
Online renewal through the RMV Online Service Center is the fastest option for most Massachusetts drivers. No appointment is needed, and you can complete the process from home in minutes.
Steps to renew your Massachusetts driver’s license online:
- Go to the Massachusetts RMV Online Service Center at mass.gov/RMV
- Sign in to your MyMassGov personal account. If you do not have one, you can create a free account using your email address. You will need to verify your identity during setup.
- Select “Renew Driver’s License” from the available services menu.
- Review and confirm your personal information. If your mailing address has changed, update it at this step so your new license is delivered to the correct address.
- Pay the renewal fee using a credit or debit card. The standard Class D or Class M fee is $50.
- Submit your renewal. You will receive a digital confirmation. Your new license will be mailed to you within 10 to 14 business days.
You can renew online up to 1 year before your license expiration date. Renewing early is smart because your new 5-year license term begins from your current expiration date, not from the date you renew. You will not lose any time by renewing ahead of schedule.
Keep in mind that online renewal only maintains your current license type. If you want to switch from a standard (non-REAL ID) license to a REAL ID, you must do this in person at an RMV Service Center and bring the required identity documents.
How to Renew Your Massachusetts Driver’s License In Person
In-person renewal is required for limited-term license holders, those without an SSN on file, and anyone upgrading to a REAL ID. You can also choose in-person renewal even if you are eligible for online renewal.
Where to renew your Massachusetts driver’s license in person:
- Any Massachusetts RMV Service Center. Walk-ins are accepted, but booking an appointment online through the RMV website is recommended because appointments are served before walk-ins and move significantly faster. Find your nearest RMV location at mass.gov.
- An AAA branch (for AAA members only). Active AAA members can renew their Massachusetts driver’s license at participating AAA locations without visiting the RMV. Contact your local AAA office to confirm hours, availability, and the specific services offered at that branch.
What to bring for an in-person renewal:
- Your current Massachusetts driver’s license
- Payment for the renewal fee (cash, check, or card, depending on the location)
- Any additional identity documents if you are upgrading to a REAL ID (see the REAL ID section below)
In-person renewals typically include a basic vision screening. If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, bring them to your appointment. After your visit, you will receive a paper receipt confirming your renewal. Keep this receipt until your new license arrives, as it serves as temporary proof of your valid license status.
How Much Does It Cost to Renew a Massachusetts Driver’s License?
Massachusetts driver’s license renewal fees are set by the RMV and depend on your license class. All fees are current per the Massachusetts RMV as of 2025.
| License Class | License Type | Term | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class D | Standard passenger vehicle | 5 years | $50 |
| Class M | Motorcycle only | 5 years | $50 |
| Class DM | Passenger vehicle and motorcycle | 5 years | $65 |
| Limited-term (any class) | Tied to visa or immigration status | Prorated | $10 per year |

Holders of a limited-term license pay $10 per year, prorated to the remaining valid term of their visa or immigration status. For example, if your visa has 2 years remaining, you would pay $20 for a 2-year limited-term renewal. These renewals must be done in person at an RMV Service Center.
How to Add or Upgrade to a REAL ID When You Renew
A REAL ID is a Massachusetts driver’s license or state ID that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act. You can identify a REAL ID by the gold star printed in the upper right corner of the card. As of May 7, 2025, a REAL ID (or a valid U.S. passport or passport card) is required to board domestic flights in the United States and to enter federal buildings and military installations.
If your current license does not have the gold star, it is a standard license. You can upgrade to a REAL ID when you renew your license, but this must be done in person at an RMV Service Center. You cannot upgrade to a REAL ID through an online renewal.
Documents required to upgrade to a REAL ID in Massachusetts:
- 1 document proving lawful presence in the United States, such as a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, permanent resident card, or Employment Authorization Document
- 1 document verifying your Social Security number, such as your Social Security card, a W-2 with your full SSN, or a pay stub showing your full SSN
- 2 documents proving Massachusetts residency, such as utility bills, bank statements, lease agreements, or government mail with your current address and name
All documents must be original or certified copies. Photocopies and digital versions are not accepted. If your name has changed since your original documents were issued (for example, due to marriage or a court order), you must also bring proof of the legal name change.
The REAL ID is particularly important if you plan to fly domestically using your driver’s license as identification. If you are not sure whether your license qualifies as REAL ID compliant, look for the gold star in the upper right corner. For the full document checklist, visit the Massachusetts REAL ID page on mass.gov.
What Happens If Your Massachusetts Driver’s License Has Expired?
Missing your license renewal deadline does not automatically mean starting from scratch, but the consequences get more serious the longer you wait. Here is what happens based on how long your license has been expired:
| Time Since Expiration | What You Can Do | Where to Renew |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day to 2 years past expiration | Renew without retaking any tests | RMV Service Center in person (online not available after expiration) |
| More than 2 years past expiration | Must retake the learner’s permit knowledge exam AND the road test | Start the licensing process from the beginning at the RMV |
Driving with an expired Massachusetts license is a civil traffic violation. Even if your license expired only a week ago, you can receive a citation if you are stopped. The safest course of action is to stop driving and renew your license before getting back on the road.
If you let your license expire for more than two years and now need to retake the road test, it is a good idea to get some professional driving lessons before your test date. Many adults who have not driven in a long time find that a few sessions with a qualified instructor rebuild their confidence and help them pass the first time. At Central Mass Safety Council, we offer adult driving school classes in Massachusetts specifically designed for drivers in this situation, as well as a program for those returning to driving after years off the road. If nerves are part of the challenge, our nervous driver lessons can help you feel ready and in control.
If you need to pass the Massachusetts road test again, our road test preparation program covers exactly what the RMV examiners are looking for.
Renewing a Massachusetts Driver’s License When You Are Under 21
In Massachusetts, drivers under the age of 21 carry a vertical driver’s license with the phrase “Under 21” printed on it. This format is required by state law and is used to indicate to businesses and law enforcement that the holder is under the legal drinking age.
If you are under 21 and your license is due for renewal, you will receive a new vertical “Under 21” license when you renew. This renewal follows the same process and costs the same as a standard adult renewal.
Once you turn 21, you are eligible to receive a standard horizontal license. You can visit any RMV Service Center on or after your 21st birthday to exchange your vertical Under 21 license for a horizontal adult license at no additional charge. This exchange does not reset your renewal clock. Your next renewal date remains the same as it would have been on your Under 21 license.
If your license renewal happens to fall on or after your 21st birthday, the RMV will automatically issue you a standard horizontal license. You do not need to make a separate exchange request.
When Will Your New License Arrive After Renewal?
After renewing your Massachusetts driver’s license, your new card will be mailed to the address on file with the RMV. Allow 10 to 14 business days for delivery. Weekends and holidays are not counted as business days, so plan accordingly if your current license is close to expiring.
While you wait for your new license to arrive:
- Online renewals: You will receive a digital confirmation when your renewal is processed. Save or screenshot this confirmation on your phone. If you are stopped by law enforcement before your new card arrives, this confirmation is a valid record of your renewed status.
- In-person renewals: The RMV or AAA office will give you a paper receipt at the time of your renewal. Keep this receipt with you while driving until your new card arrives. The receipt shows your current license status and serves as temporary documentation.
If your new license does not arrive within 14 business days, contact the Massachusetts RMV to verify your mailing address on file and to request a replacement card if necessary. Do not wait past 14 business days before following up, especially if your old license has already expired.
